01 · Scope
One tool reduces preparation; the other is an authoring environment
SpriteSplitter is task-focused
Load a composite, detect multiple subjects, correct regions, normalize output, and deliver transparent files without installing a desktop editor.
Aseprite is creation-focused
Its documented workflows include pixel editing, frames and layers, slices, animation export, image sequences, sprite sheets, and command-line operations.
02 · Workflow
A combined workflow for recovered or generated game art
- Extract the boardUse SpriteSplitter to isolate the useful objects and establish names, order, canvas, and alignment.
- Triage the resultsUse the contact sheet to decide which sprites are finished and which need pixel cleanup or animation work.
- Author selected assetsOpen only the necessary PNG files in Aseprite for pixel correction, palette work, layers, tags, and animation.
- Export for the targetExport final sequences or sheets from Aseprite, or return approved individual files to the engine packaging workflow.
03 · Decision guide
Task-based comparison
| Task | SpriteSplitter | Aseprite |
|---|---|---|
| Detect many objects in one irregular board | Primary workflow | Manual slices or editing workflow |
| Pixel-level drawing and cleanup | Not an authoring editor | Primary workflow |
| Animation timeline and tags | Not included | Primary workflow |
| Repeatable canvas and naming export | Built into extraction | Configurable through export workflows |
| No-install browser access | Yes | Desktop application / CLI |
04 · Quality gate
Choose based on the work that remains
- The source already contains finished visual objects.
- The job is mostly separating and naming assets.
- Individual pixels or palettes require editing.
- Animation timing and frame tags must be authored.
- A non-technical reviewer needs a contact sheet.
- The workflow must run without a desktop installation.
05 · Questions
What to confirm before you ship
- Does SpriteSplitter replace a pixel-art editor?
- No. It does not provide drawing layers, a pixel brush, animation timelines, tags, or palette authoring.
- Can Aseprite export separate PNG frames?
- Yes. Aseprite documents image-sequence, slice, and sprite-sheet export workflows.
- When should both tools be used?
- Use SpriteSplitter for rapid extraction and triage, then open only the assets that need detailed visual editing or animation in Aseprite.
